The HWEN Email List is a way to communicate quickly and conveniently with neighbors about issues of common interest. Fast-breaking news, crime alerts, and other communications will be broadcast to all mailing list subscribers. Also, when a new issue of the newsletter is posted to the website, a notice will be sent to all email list subscribers, allowing them to receive the newsletter electronically. There are two ways to join the mailing list: - You can sign up on the web, which requires creating a Google account (you do not have to have a gmail email address though -- any email address will work). This is the preferred method, because it allows you to set preferences for your account and review the list of old messages.
- Or you can sign up via email only.
To sign up on the web:- Go to http://groups.google.com/group/hwen and on the right side of the screen click on "Join this group"
- You will be taken to a new web page where you can sign in using your Google account, or create an account if you don't have one already. This is an easy process. You will be required to enter an email address when creating the Google account, but it can be any email address (it does not have to be Gmail).
- This option lets you view the archive of past posts, set personal preferences for receiving emails, etc.
Or, if you don't want to sign up on the web, you can sign up via email:- Send an email to hwen-subscribe@googlegroups.com
- You should receive a confirmation email in a few minutes. Hit REPLY to reply to this confirmation email (no message text is needed). That will confirm your email address.
- You should now be registered in the group.
- In the confirmation email, there is an option to click on a link in the email rather than using REPLY. If you click on this link you will be signed up and confirmed, but you may get an error message on the screen about an expired invitation. Ignore this.
Once you are signed up, you can post a message to the group:- Send an email to hwen@googlegroups.com
- Your email must be read and approved by a moderator before it can be posted, so it may take a few minutes or longer for it to appear.
- Please read the posting guidelines for the mailing list before sending a message.

The
discussion forum differs from the email list in the following ways:
- You have
to join this forum separately from the email list. Email list subscribers are
not automatically registered for the discussion forum.
- Posting
guidelines are more relaxed. Just about any message (even commercial ones or
one-sided opinions) are welcome, as long as discussion is civil and
polite.
- No one reviews
messages before they are posted. Inappropriate messages can be
removed by the moderator only after
someone reports the message as inappropriate.
- By
default, new messages are not emailed out to members of the forum. You have to
visit the forum web page to check for new postings. There is an option to be
notified by email when ever a new posting is made (this is called subscribing to
the forum) -- you can do this once you have
registered.
- Discussions are encouraged on the forum -- One person can create a new topic, and others can reply to that topic with their own
postings.
- There are actually three forums on the site -- "General Discussions", "Buying
and Selling", and "Neighborhood Businesses." Each forum has
posting guidelines as the first topic in the forum. Please read these to
determine the best place for your
topic.
